Here are the general steps to unscrew a ball valve:
1. Identify the Type of Handle:
If the ball valve has a lever handle, it usually operates with a quarter-turn motion.
If it has a knob or handwheel, it may require multiple turns to open or close the valve.
2. Determine the Open or Closed Position:
If the valve is in the closed position, the handle will likely be perpendicular to the pipeline.
If the valve is in the open position, the handle will likely be parallel to the pipeline.
3. Turn the Handle:
For a lever handle, turn it clockwise to close the valve and counterclockwise to open it. Remember, it's usually a quarter-turn motion.
For a knob or handwheel, turn it clockwise to close the valve and counterclockwise to open it. The number of turns may vary based on the design of the valve.
4. Use a Wrench if Needed:
If the valve is challenging to turn by hand or the handle is stuck, you can use an adjustable wrench to provide additional leverage.
Place the wrench on the flat sides of the valve stem (the part connecting the handle to the valve body) and turn it in the appropriate direction.
5. Be Mindful of the Threads:
As you turn the valve, be aware of the threaded connections. If the valve is threaded into the pipeline, turning it will also unscrew it from the pipe.
If you're planning to remove the valve entirely, you may need to use a pipe wrench to grip the valve body securely while unscrewing it from the pipe.
6. Close the Inlet/Outlet:
Before unscrewing the valve, it's advisable to close the inlet and outlet connections to prevent any leakage or water flow.
