What Is The Difference Between A One-way Butterfly Valve And A Two-way Butterfly Valve?

Apr 15, 2025

The main differences between one-way butterfly valves and two-way butterfly valves are in the pressure bearing direction, structural design, functional application and sealing performance, as follows

1. Pressure bearing direction
One-way butterfly valve: can only withstand positive pressure, that is, the medium flows in from one side of the valve and flows out from the other side. If the medium flows in the opposite direction, the valve may not be able to seal effectively, resulting in internal leakage.
Two-way butterfly valve: can withstand two-way pressure, that is, the medium can flow in from either side of the valve, and can achieve reliable sealing without internal leakage.
2. Structural design
One-way butterfly valve
Valve body design: There is usually an arrow on the valve body indicating the flow direction of the medium. During installation, it must be carried out in the direction indicated by the arrow to ensure the normal operation of the valve.
Sealing structure: The sealing structure and guide mechanism are designed for one-way flow characteristics. They can fit tightly and effectively block the fluid during forward flow, but may not adapt to reverse flow, affecting the sealing performance.
Two-way butterfly valve
Valve body design: There is no arrow on the valve body indicating the flow direction of the medium. There is no need to consider the flow direction of the medium during installation, and it is more flexible to use.
Sealing structure: With a symmetrical design, the sealing structure and guide mechanism can provide stable guidance for the movement of the butterfly plate in both the forward and reverse directions, ensuring that the valve can achieve effective sealing in bidirectional flow.
3. Functional application
One-way butterfly valve: Suitable for occasions where the fluid flow direction is relatively fixed, such as general water supply pipeline systems, simple drainage lines, etc. In these scenarios, the one-way butterfly valve can stably control the one-way flow of the fluid to ensure the normal operation of the system.
Two-way butterfly valve: Suitable for occasions where the fluid flow direction needs to be frequently changed or the fluid flow direction is uncertain, such as complex chemical process flows, circulating water systems, and chilled water circuits of air-conditioning systems. In these systems, the two-way butterfly valve can flexibly control the forward and reverse flow of the fluid to meet different process requirements.
4. Sealing performance
One-way butterfly valve: It can provide reliable sealing effect in the forward flow direction of its design, but leakage may occur in the reverse flow due to structural limitations.
Bidirectional butterfly valve: Due to the bidirectional sealing structure, it can maintain a good sealing state in both forward and reverse flows, greatly reducing the possibility of leakage. It has obvious advantages, especially in industries with extremely high sealing requirements, such as petrochemical, food and pharmaceutical industries.
