As the name suggests, double offset butterfly valves have two stems offset from the centre. A triple offset butterfly valve has three. Two of which are placed in a similar position to the double offset butterfly valve, while the third is the geometry of the seating surface. This creates a cone shape between the disc and seat.
Triple offset valves are used in similar industries as double offset valves, except in more demanding applications. Double offset valves experience friction at the first 10° of opening and last 10° of closing. The third offset ensures the disc and seat are not in contact until the last 1° of closing, allowing virtually frictionless operation.
One of the fundamental maintenance practices for butterfly valves is regular inspection. By comparison, should exhaust butterfly valves remain stuck open, engines will start to slow as the gas-air mixture will be too rich. Unless valves are calibrated to accommodate a balanced fuel mixture, unburned gasoline will slosh around inside the cylinders, causing other vehicle components to foul.
To close the valve, apply a solution of alcohol mixed with powdered graphite to serve as a lubricant for the shaft. Should this not take, spray with a solvent that removes rust, as this will penetrate areas that the makeshift lubricant can't reach.
As a general rule of thumb for servicing exhaust butterfly valves, do not lubricate with any kind of oil. If a lubricant is required, stick to the solution above as even the thinnest oil types will make the valve seize and seal tighter than before, in either open or closed positions.

To make a proper comparison, we need to understand the technology behind both. The rubber-lined butterfly valve bodies are typically cast iron or ductile iron. High-performance valves do have the option for ductile iron but are primarily utilized with cast steel (or SS) bodies. The rubber-lined valves have a rubber-lined boot that acts as its seat. That boot is fitted and glued into the body of the valve. These rubber liners are sensitive to chemicals and have a shorter life expectancy (hardening and cracking over time).
The high-performance butterfly valves utilize polymeric seats which have an infinite life expectancy and a very high chemical - resistance very few chemicals are known to affect the fluorocarbon-based polymers which makes these products attractive to an industrial valve application.
Butterfly valves work as throttling devices by controlling the flow of fluids through a circular disc or plate positioned in the path of the flow. The disc is mounted on a shaft that is rotated by a handle or actuator, allowing the disc to be positioned at different angles to the flow path.
When the disc is in a fully open position, the fluid flows through the valve with minimal resistance. However, when the disc is partially closed, the fluid encounters a smaller opening, creating a more significant pressure drop and reducing the flow rate.
However, butterfly valves are only effective for throttling when properly designed and selected for the specific application. Not all butterfly valve designs are created equal, so it's important to consider the available options to ensure optimal performance.
On the other hand, double eccentric butterfly valves, offer much better flow regulation thanks to their unique build. With a reduced risk of seat set or deformation and a design that prevents valve rubbing on the resilient seat until the last 10% of closure, it's an ideal choice for throttling applications.
Something to always be aware of, is that when using a butterfly valve for throttling, the chances of cavitation increase due to the design of the valve. When high pressure and velocities pass through the valve to the other side of the disc, we run into the possibility of cavitation and this should be considered when selecting the correct valve for your application.
